First Lady Heads To Abia Tuesday For Akwete Heritage Celebration

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, will visit Abia State on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, to celebrate the historic Akwete weaving tradition and its contribution to Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

The visit, according to a statement by Abia Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, will see Senator Tinubu hosted by Governor Alex Otti and his wife, Mrs Priscilla Otti.

A major part of the engagement will be a tour of the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area, where the First Lady will meet master weavers and observe the craftsmanship behind the internationally recognized Akwete textile.

She will later join Governor Otti for a civic reception at the Akwete Central School Field, scheduled for 10:00 a.m.

The event is expected to attract government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, women and youth groups, stakeholders and residents as Abia showcases the cultural significance of Akwete weaving.

The state government has urged residents, especially those in Ukwa East and neighboring communities, to turn out in large numbers to welcome the First Lady.

Akwete cloth, woven for generations by skilled artisans, remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated indigenous textiles and an important source of livelihood for many women in the community.
