Football Pays More Than Music — Skales

Nigerian singer Skales has argued that professional football offers greater financial rewards than a career in music, pointing to the structured nature of the sport and the uncertainty surrounding the entertainment industry.

Speaking on The Groovy Mono Show in an interview monitored on Monday, the artist maintained that athletes enjoy more consistent earnings compared to musicians.

“Footballers earn more money than musicians.” he averred.

He noted that footballers benefit from regular income streams, including salaries and performance bonuses, regardless of their global popularity.

As long as you are an active footballer and you’re playing, you’re earning salaries and bonuses. You don’t have to be the most popular player in the world,” he said.

In contrast, he described the music industry as highly volatile, where success can be fleeting.

“Music is very competitive and unpredictable. You can be here today and gone tomorrow,”** he noted.

According to him, maintaining relevance in the music space is a major challenge and often beyond an artist’s full control.

“Staying relevant in the music industry sometimes feels like something you can’t fully control,”he added.

Skales also recounted losing a lucrative endorsement opportunity tied to a footballer, which he said was valued at more than $300,000.

“I once lost a jewellery deal worth over $300,000 because it was linked to a footballer,’ he said.

He used the incident to emphasise how footballers attract endorsement deals irrespective of their level of fame.

“Footballers get endorsement deals even if they’re not globally famous,”he explained.

While acknowledging that a handful of Nigerian musicians achieve significant financial success, he stressed that many others struggle with steady income.

Only a few artists make a lot of money, but many are struggling to earn consistently,” he said.

He concluded by reiterating the financial advantage of a football career.

“Football gives you a more reliable path to financial stability if you make it professionally,” Skales stated.
