From Governor to King: 8 Things to Know About Ibadan’s 44th Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja

The city of Ibadan entered a new chapter in its history in 2025 with the installation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan. His coronation marked a unique blend of political, business, and traditional leadership in Nigeria’s largest indigenous city. Here are key facts about the new monarch:

1. Former Governor of Oyo State

Oba Ladoja served as Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His administration was notable for reforms and controversies, including an impeachment that was later overturned by the courts.

2. Elder Statesman Turned Monarch

Born on September 25, 1944, the new Olubadan ascended the throne at the age of 81, bringing decades of political and leadership experience to Ibadan’s traditional stool.

3. Well-Educated Leader

He studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Liège in Belgium. Multilingual and fluent in French, Ladoja built a successful professional career before venturing into politics.

4. Accomplished Businessman

His career spanned several multinational companies, including Total Nigeria, before he established private businesses, particularly in the oil, gas, and shipping sectors.

5. Three-Decade Journey to the Throne

Oba Ladoja began his climb through the Ibadan chieftaincy system more than 32 years ago. He held various titles, including Jagun Olubadan, Osi Olubadan, and Otun Olubadan, before becoming Olubadan in 2025.

6. Defender of Tradition

He strongly opposed the controversial 2017 chieftaincy review introduced by the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, which sought to elevate several Ibadan chiefs to “kings.” Ladoja challenged the move in court and won, preserving the integrity of Ibadan’s succession structure.

7. Respected Bridge-Builder

Known for his calm demeanor and diplomatic approach, Oba Ladoja is widely regarded as a stabilising figure, respected for his ability to manage complex political and social situations.

8. Successor to Oba Olakulehin

He succeeded the late Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, who reigned from 2024 until his death on July 7, 2025.

With his rich blend of political experience, business acumen, and respect for tradition, Oba Ladoja’s reign as the 44th Olubadan is expected to usher in a new era of stability and progress for Ibadanland.
