Fubara, Deputy Make First Public Appearance After Assembly Impeachment Move

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, on Sunday made their first public appearance since the Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday, January 8, initiated fresh impeachment proceedings against them.

Both officials were seen at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt during a service held to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, ending days of public silence following the political escalation at the state legislature.

Fubara had only recently returned to Port Harcourt after a trip abroad, although neither the destination nor the purpose of the visit was disclosed by the government.

The presence of the governor and his deputy at the church service drew attention because it came barely days after lawmakers moved to accuse them of gross misconduct, opening what is now the third impeachment attempt against Fubara in less than three years.

Other senior government officials were also in attendance at the service, which is traditionally held to honour Nigerian servicemen and women who lost their lives defending the country’s unity and sovereignty, with prayers also offered for those still serving.

Despite the renewed political tension, the Rivers State Government has yet to make any public statement responding to the impeachment allegations levelled by the House of Assembly.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed media reports have suggested that Fubara left the country on Thursday aboard a private jet, with the intention of meeting President Bola Tinubu in France, as the impeachment saga intensified in Rivers State.
