Georgia Honours Peter Obi with Honorary Citizenship

The State of Georgia in the United States has conferred honorary citizenship on the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi.

Obi announced the recognition in a statement on X on Friday, shortly after taking part in a series of events marking the Black Congressional Week in Washington, D.C.

The former Anambra State governor explained that his engagements began with the Congressional Black Caucus Week Reception at the U.S.

Senate Kennedy Caucus Room, hosted by Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock. He noted that Senator Warnock encouraged him to share insights on African democracy and development.

Obi also held talks with Ms Kim Clark, Chief Executive Officer of Georgia Power, the state’s largest independent energy company, where discussions centered on electricity generation and distribution.

In addition, he addressed participants at the One Voice Africa event, an advocacy platform for Black immigrant dignity.

There, he stressed the need for Africans in the diaspora to actively support the promotion of good governance on the continent.

Describing the honorary citizenship as the highlight of his activities, Obi said the experience reinforced his determination to contribute to Africa’s progress and to continue championing the vision of a “new Nigeria anchored on visionary and responsible leadership.”

“For me, the day’s events were about learning, serving, and remaining committed to building a new Nigeria that is truly possible,” he said.
