Renowned Nigerian gospel singer, pastor, and trumpeter Nathaniel Bassey is celebrating his 44th birthday today, Wednesday, August 27, 2025, a milestone that highlights his decades-long influence in gospel music and Christian ministry.
Born on August 27, 1981, in Lagos, Bassey discovered music at an early age and mastered the trumpet as a teenager.
He first gained prominence as a member of the Steve Rhodes Orchestra, one of Nigeria’s most respected jazz ensembles, before beginning his solo career.
His debut album, Elohim, recorded and released in Cape Town in 2008, introduced him as a distinct voice in gospel music.
Bassey has since become a household name with hit songs including “Imela,” “Onise Iyanu,” “Olowogbogboro,” and “You Are God.”
His music, known for blending contemporary jazz with worship, has earned him recognition beyond Nigeria, with international concerts and collaborations spreading his message globally.
He studied International Relations and Politics at the University of Lagos before pursuing advanced music training at Middlesex University Summer School in London, focusing on music composition and performance.
In June 2017, he launched the now famous #HallelujahChallenge, a midnight praise and worship session streamed on Instagram Live from 12 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily.
