Gov Diri Urges NDDC to Consult Niger Delta States for Effective Devt

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has urged the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to engage in thorough consultations with state governments across the Niger Delta region before launching new projects.

Governor Diri made the call on Monday during a courtesy visit by NDDC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, and his management team at the Government House in Yenagoa.

Governor Diri emphasized that the NDDC, as an intervention agency, should work to complement the efforts of state governments rather than operate in competition.

He highlighted the importance of ensuring collaboration with state ministries to prevent redundancy and to streamline the development efforts across the region.

“It is not proper for NDDC projects to be executed without consultation with states or the governors of the region,” Diri stated.

He further explained that, according to the NDDC Act, governors serve as members of the commission’s advisory committee, a mandate that has not been upheld for the past four years. This lack of coordination, he argued, has led to scattered projects and ineffective development efforts.

Governor Diri stressed the need for mutual respect and synergy between the NDDC and state governments to foster unified and rapid development across the region.

He commended Dr. Ogbuku’s leadership for its visible efforts to improve the commission, noting that Ogbuku’s team has displayed commitment and a passion for change.

“I see that you are trying to change the narrative with the commitment and passion that you have brought to bear on your job. You are on a trajectory of change,” Diri acknowledged.

Diri also assured the NDDC of his administration’s support, especially in tackling issues like the frequent flooding affecting Bayelsa State.

He encouraged the NDDC to partner with the state government and other stakeholders to address regional challenges, particularly in terms of funding.

In response, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku highlighted the commission’s dedication to addressing the needs of the Niger Delta people.

Ogbuku shared that the NDDC is working with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to build emergency shelters for flood victims in Otuoke and Odi.

Additionally, he revealed plans to mitigate flooding by canalizing the Okarki-Otuabagi area of Kolo Creek and rehabilitating the flood-damaged Odi-Trofani road.

Ogbuku and his team’s visit aimed to assess the status of ongoing projects, reflecting the commission’s commitment to aligning with local needs and collaborating with regional leaders to achieve sustainable development.
