Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), describing him as a pillar of unity and a defining figure in the country’s history as he turned 91 on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
In a goodwill message shared on his verified social media page, Saraki praised Gowon for his leadership and enduring commitment to national cohesion, noting that his decision to pursue reconciliation after the civil war remains one of the most remarkable acts of statesmanship in Nigeria’s history.
“General Yakubu Gowon has defined what it means to lead with discipline, patriotism, and a deep sense of commitment to the unity of our nation,” Saraki said.
He added that his family joins Nigerians in celebrating the elder statesman, praying for continued health and long life.

“Today, as he turns 91, my family and I extend our warmest congratulations. We thank God for his life and pray that he continues to enjoy good health, peace of mind, and many more years in the company of loved ones,” the former Senate President wrote.
General Gowon, who governed Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, is remembered for initiating the country’s post-civil war reconciliation policy built on the principle of “No Victor, No Vanquished”, a cornerstone of the nation’s unity and stability.
