…everything Nigerian students need to know about applying for the federal government’s interest-free student loan, from eligibility to disbursement.
Every academic session, thousands of Nigerian students with admission letters in hand are forced to defer, drop out, or beg for fees because tuition simply will not add up. NELFUND, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, exists to close that gap, and getting approved is far simpler than most students think, once you know exactly where to look and what to prepare.
What Is NELFUND?
NELFUND is the federal government agency responsible for administering student loans in Nigeria. It reviews applications, verifies students through their institutions, and disburses funds directly, all without interest and without requiring a guarantor. It has already put billions of naira into the hands of students across the country, but the fund only helps students who apply correctly, so the details matter.
Who Is Eligible?
Not every student qualifies. NELFUND is currently open to:
• Nigerian citizens only. International students are not covered.
• Fresh entrants into a qualifying institution, using their JAMB registration number.
• Direct Entry (DE) students.
• Full-time students who are actively enrolled. Part-time students, and anyone who has already graduated, do not qualify.
Which Schools Qualify?
The loan covers students in public universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and state universities. Your institution must also be registered with NELFUND and must have uploaded your enrollment record to the NELFUND Student Verification Portal. Private universities are not covered, and if your school has not submitted your records, your application cannot move forward no matter how complete your documents are.
The Documents You Need for KYC Registration
Before you start, gather these, since the portal will ask for all of them:
• JAMB registration number (or matric number, for returning students)
• National Identification Number (NIN), linked to your registered phone number
• Bank Verification Number (BVN)
• A recent passport photograph
• An active Nigerian bank account opened in your own name
How to Apply, Step by Step
• Go to the official NELFUND Student Loan Portal at portal.nelf.gov.ng and create an account with a valid email address.

• Verify your identity using your NIN and your JAMB or matric number.
• Complete your KYC profile: upload your passport photograph, and enter your BVN and bank details.
• Confirm your institution and programme, and check that your school has uploaded your record to NELFUND.
• Select the loan component you are applying for, tuition, upkeep, or both, and submit your application.
• Track your application status from your dashboard until it is approved and disbursed.
What the Loan Actually Covers
NELFUND loans have two separate components, and they do not work the same way. School fees are paid directly to your institution’s account, so the money never touches your hands, and you never have to worry about misusing it. Upkeep, on the other hand, is paid into your own verified bank account, but only while school is in active session. Once the session ends or you go on break, upkeep payments pause until the next active period resumes.
What Could Get You Disqualified
NELFUND takes accountability seriously, and penalties apply to certain categories of students. You are unlikely to qualify, or risk losing your loan, if you fall into any of these groups:
• Students who have defaulted on a previous loan.
• Students who are already existing beneficiaries under the scheme for the same purpose.
• Students found guilty of misconduct within their institution.
• Anyone with a fraud conviction.
Before You Apply
The application portal opens in cycles rather than staying open all year, so keep an eye on official NELFUND announcements and your school’s notice board for the current window. Applying early matters too, since disbursements go out in batches and early applicants tend to receive their funds sooner. For a generation of students who have watched tuition fees outrun family budgets, NELFUND is, for now, one of the most direct paths back into the classroom, provided you apply the right way, with the right documents, at the right time.
