IGP Summons Akerele Over Lagos Taskforce Scandal

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has summoned the Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce), CSP Adetayo Akerele, to the Force Headquarters following allegations of misconduct linked to officers under his command.

The move comes after growing complaints online, where residents in Lagos have raised concerns and demanded Akerele’s removal.

The issue gained traction after a blogger shared videos accusing Taskforce operatives of extortion, rights violations, and involvement in questionable land dealings.

Sources say the IGP is paying close attention to the matter, in line with ongoing efforts to enforce discipline and uphold human rights across the police force.

“CSP Akerele has been asked to report at the Force Headquarters on Monday. The allegations are significant, and the outcome of the meeting will determine the next course of action,” a source disclosed.

At the state level, the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has cautioned Taskforce officers against misconduct, warning that any form of corruption, extortion, or abuse of authority will attract firm sanctions.

He stressed that any unit found going against the operational standards set by the Inspector-General could be disbanded.

Jimoh assured Lagos residents that the command will enforce the law without bias. He said any officer found guilty of violating citizens’ rights will face prosecution and urged the public to back their complaints with solid evidence.

Referring to a past incident, he cited how five officers from another command were traced, arrested, and taken to court over a shooting at Owode Onirin Market.

“We will not shield any officer found guilty of misconduct. If five officers could be brought before the court over the Owode Onirin incident, no one will be exempt where wrongdoing is established,” he said.

He added that newly vetted officers have been assigned to the Taskforce, with ongoing collaboration involving civil society and human rights groups to improve conduct within the unit.

The commissioner also urged residents to stay involved in security matters, noting that public cooperation remains key.
