Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on Nigerians to approach the country’s 65th Independence Day with sober reflection, urging citizens to look beyond the festivities and consider the challenges facing the nation.
Speaking at a special Jumu’ah service held in Lagos to mark the anniversary, Sanwo-Olu said that while independence remains a milestone worth celebrating, it also provides an opportunity for introspection.
“We must remind ourselves that independence is not just about merrymaking,” the governor stated.
“It is a time to take stock of how far we have come as a people, the difficulties we face, and the roles we must play in shaping a better future.”
Sanwo-Olu reiterated his support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stressing that reforms currently being implemented at the federal level are geared toward improving living conditions for Nigerians.

He encouraged citizens to maintain faith in the country’s leadership and contribute positively to national development.
The governor explained that Lagos, like other states, opted for a modest commemoration in line with federal directives and in recognition of the economic realities affecting millions of Nigerians.
Sanwo-Olu concluded by urging Nigerians to stay united, resilient, and optimistic, insisting that collective effort remains crucial to building the nation envisioned by its founding fathers.
