The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has now received 122 applications from groups seeking to register as political parties in Nigeria.
The commission’s latest update was contained in a statement on Thursday, July 3, by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
“On Monday last week, 23rd June 2025, the commission announced that it had received applications from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties.
“We also assured Nigerians that we would be providing regular updates on the matter,” he said. “The commission is processing these applications transparently and in fairness to all applicants.”
Olumekun added that INEC has received 12 more applications since then, raising the total to 122.
“As of yesterday, Wednesday, 2nd July 2025, the commission has received 12 more applications, bringing the total to 122,” he said.

He explained that the names, acronyms, addresses, interim chairmen, and secretaries of all the new applicants have been uploaded to INEC’s website and other public platforms.
The commission also noted internal changes in leadership within some of the applying groups, including a case where an interim secretary resigned and defected to another association.
INEC advised all applicant associations to ensure consistency in their leadership and contact details during the process to avoid unnecessary delays.
“To facilitate the consideration of these applications, the commission appeals to associations to maintain consistency of their proposed leadership and addresses so that they do not, by their own actions, cause delays to the timely consideration of their applications,” the statement added.
The commission stressed that all applications will be reviewed in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022.
