Senate Opens Constitution Review in Lagos

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), who leads the Senate, has announced that a public hearing on the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution will begin today in Lagos.

He said the hearing will focus on public input regarding “proposals for the creation of 18 additional local governments, establishment of state police and far-reaching reforms of the electoral system,” and other key national matters.

Other hearings will take place at the same time in various geopolitical zones, excluding the North-West.

The North-West session was moved due to the death of Alhaji Aminu Dantata, a respected businessman and philanthropist from Kano, who passed away on Saturday.

In a statement issued on the 3rd of July, 2025, Bamidele, who also chairs the South-West Zone Constitution Review Committee, outlined the agenda for the two-day event.

He explained that the hearing gives Nigerians a platform to voice their opinions on major governance challenges.
