INEC Records 500,000 Online Voter Pre-Registrations in Five Days

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says more than half a million Nigerians have completed their online pre-registration for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) within five days of its relaunch.

The announcement was made on Friday, August 22, in Abuja during the official launch of a nationwide sensitisation campaign to encourage citizens to take part in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, represented at the event by National Commissioner Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, described the response as a sign of renewed public confidence in the electoral process.

“As of midnight on Thursday, 22nd of August, 2025, over 505,906 citizens have pre-registered since the portal opened five days ago.

“For us, this is a testament that Nigerians believe in our democracy and the efforts of the commission to further strengthen the electoral process,” he said.

Yakubu explained that while online registration began on August 18, 2025, the physical phase will start on August 25, 2025.

From that date, Nigerians who pre-registered online and new applicants will be able to complete their registration at INEC state and local government offices across the country, where their biometrics will be captured.

To boost awareness, INEC rolled out a nationwide sensitisation drive.

In Abuja, a colourful roadshow organised by the Voter Education and Publicity Department moved from the Commission’s headquarters in Maitama to Banex Plaza, then to Wuse Market. Similar activities are expected in other states.

The chairman urged Nigerians, especially young people and newly eligible voters, to seize the opportunity.

“Your Permanent Voter Card is the key to making your voice heard,” he emphasised, while calling on political parties, civil society, the media, and other stakeholders to support the campaign.

According to INEC, the CVR will take place at 811 centres nationwide, covering all 774 local government areas and state offices. Registration will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Through its portal, www.cvr.inecnigeria.org, citizens can pre-register, check their PVC status, locate registration centres, transfer their registration, replace lost or damaged PVCs, and update personal information.

The commission added that special provisions have been made to ensure persons with disabilities and vulnerable groups have unhindered access to the exercise.
