INEC Records 69,376 Online Pre-Registrations in Seven Hours

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says 69,376 Nigerians completed online pre-registration within the first seven hours of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), which commenced on Monday, August 18.

According to the Commission, the registration portal went live at 8.30 am and recorded massive activity by 3.30 pm.

“Of this figure, 33,803 (48.7%) are male while 35,573 (51.3%) are female. In terms of age, 48,033 (69.2%) are young persons aged 18-34,” the statement signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, disclosed.

INEC added that the CVR portal will remain open 24 hours daily at cvr.inecnigeria.org, providing round-the-clock access to eligible citizens.

Meanwhile, the Commission announced that in-person registration will commence on Monday, August 25, at its 811 state and local government offices across the country.

“This will enable those who prefer the in-person option to register and for the online pre-registrants to complete their registration,” it explained. Both options will run simultaneously throughout the exercise.

To keep the public informed, INEC pledged weekly updates on registration figures.

“From next week, the Commission will be giving weekly updates on the CVR, including detailed breakdown by State, gender, age, occupation and disability,” the statement read.

The Commission, however, reminded Nigerians that registration is strictly for citizens who are at least 18 years old and not already on the voter register.

It warned that “double or multiple registration is a violation of the law,” but clarified that transfers between states or within the FCT, as well as replacement of lost or damaged voter cards, are permitted.

With this early surge, INEC said it expects more Nigerians, especially youths, to take advantage of both online and in-person options ahead of future elections.
