Inferno Engulfs South Korea Car Factory, 14 Workers Die

Fourteen workers have been confirmed dead after a fast-moving fire ripped through an auto parts manufacturing facility in Daejeon, with authorities closing search operations after recovering all those initially reported missing.

The incident occurred on Friday, March 20, 2026, when flames broke out inside the multi-level industrial complex in the Daedeok area, spreading with alarming speed through production sections of the plant.

The situation was compounded by highly flammable materials within the facility, which accelerated the fire’s intensity and limited escape options for those inside.

Emergency services mounted an extensive response, dispatching large numbers of firefighters and specialised units to contain the blaze and carry out rescue efforts.

Crews worked under difficult conditions, navigating unstable structures and potential chemical hazards as they combed through the site.

By Saturday, March 21, 2026, officials confirmed that the bodies of all 14 workers previously unaccounted for had been recovered, marking the end of rescue efforts and the beginning of a recovery phase.

Dozens of others sustained injuries in the incident, with several in serious condition.

Some were hurt in the scramble to flee as smoke and flames rapidly engulfed parts of the building.

Preliminary accounts suggest the fire may have been triggered by an explosion within the facility, though investigators are still working to establish the exact sequence of events.

The plant is understood to be linked to the broader automotive supply network, and the scale of the disaster has prompted renewed concerns over industrial safety standards in high-risk manufacturing environments.

Authorities have opened a full investigation into the cause of the fire and signalled a review of existing safety protocols as the country grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy.
