The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has firmly denied any connection to the 2021 killing of Ahmed Gulak, a former political adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, dismissing recent claims linking the group to the incident as “false and misleading.”

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB clarified that the sit-at-home directive it declared for its annual Biafra Remembrance Day was observed on Monday, May 31, 2021—one day after Gulak’s murder on Sunday, May 30.

“This timeline alone proves that IPOB had no involvement in his death. Linking the tragic event to IPOB is baseless,” the statement read.

The group also reacted to the introduction of Gulak’s death certificate in the ongoing trial of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, calling the development irrelevant and an attempt to distract from the substance of the case.

“The death certificate of Ahmed Gulak bears no relevance to the context of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s trial,” IPOB stated, insisting that the legal proceedings should not be muddled with unrelated incidents.

Additionally, IPOB condemned what it described as persistent media misrepresentation and urged journalists to uphold the core principles of responsible journalism, including accuracy, objectivity, and fairness.

“We call on all responsible media outlets to prioritize factual reporting and avoid spreading narratives that could mislead the public,” the statement added.

The pro-Biafra movement also reiterated its call for the “immediate and unconditional release” of Kanu, whom it maintains is being unlawfully detained in violation of both local and international legal standards.

IPOB’s remarks come amid increased scrutiny over the group’s activities and renewed attention to Kanu’s trial, which continues to draw both national and international interest.
