Iwobi Assists Twice as Super Eagles Win AFCON Opener

Nigeria began their Africa Cup of Nations campaign on a positive note with a 2–1 victory over Tanzania at the Fes Stadium in Morocco on Sunday night, thanks to goals from Semi Ajayi and Lookman, and an inspired performance from Alex Iwobi.

The Super Eagles took the lead in the 35th minute when Ajayi rose highest in the box to power home a brilliant header, converting a well-delivered assist from Iwobi.

The goal gave Nigeria control of the contest and ensured they went into the break with a 1–0 advantage.

Tanzania, however, emerged from the interval with renewed intent and were rewarded in the 50th minute when M’Mombwa C. found the net to restore parity, briefly threatening to derail Nigeria’s strong start.

The response from the Super Eagles was immediate. Just two minutes later, Lookman struck to put Nigeria back in front, once again benefiting from Iwobi’s vision and precise delivery.

The quick reply settled Nigeria and shifted the momentum firmly back in their favour.

Iwobi’s two assists on the night underlined his influence, taking his tally to a competition-high total after six matches, the most by any player so far.

Nigeria held on comfortably in the closing stages to secure all three points, sealing a 2–1 win and laying down an early marker as they kick off their AFCON journey with confidence.
