Jonathan Backs Sowore’s Push to Free Nnamdi Kanu, Plans Talks with Tinubu

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to discuss the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Sowore disclosed the meeting in a post on his verified social media accounts on Friday, noting that Jonathan agreed on the urgent need to resolve Kanu’s case “decisively and justly.”

“President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly. He also promised to meet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu soon to discuss the issue,” Sowore said.

The activist thanked the former president for recognizing that Kanu’s continued incarceration poses a threat to peace and national healing.

He noted that Jonathan’s stance adds to a growing list of prominent Nigerians, including Atiku Abubakar, Femi Falana (SAN), and Senator Shehu Sani, who have called for Kanu’s release.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention because he took up the just cause of confronting the long-standing issue of marginalization in Nigeria,” Sowore stated.

Sowore urged political and cultural leaders, including Peter Obi, Governors Charles Soludo, Alex Otti, and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, to support the campaign for justice and freedom.

Kanu has been in detention since June 2021 after his re-arrest and extradition from Kenya. Although the Court of Appeal discharged and acquitted him in October 2022, the Federal Government appealed the ruling, and the case remains before the Supreme Court.

Calls for his release have intensified in recent weeks, with many arguing that freeing him would ease regional tensions and foster national reconciliation.
