Jonathan Stranded Abroad, Lawmakers Push FG for Immediate Evacuation

The House of Representatives on Thursday, November 27, 2025, urged the Federal Government to take urgent diplomatic and security measures to ensure the safe return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is stranded in Guinea‑Bissau following a military coup.

The coup, which occurred on November 26, 2025, disrupted the presidential election and left Jonathan in the country as part of an international election‑monitoring mission along with other foreign observers, in a precarious situation.

During Thursday’s plenary, lawmakers expressed deep concern for Jonathan’s safety.

House Leader Julius Ihonvbere told the chamber that the former president’s presence in Guinea‑Bissau coincided with the coup, highlighting the need for swift government action.

The House passed a resolution directing the Federal Government to use all available diplomatic and security channels to facilitate Jonathan’s safe return.

The resolution underscores Nigeria’s commitment to protecting its citizens overseas and reflects the urgency prompted by the coup and its immediate impact on stranded nationals.
