The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced the postponement of its proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general election.
The decision was reached on Friday, April 10, during a meeting between the commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, where key electoral matters were reviewed.
In a statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission said the exercise, initially planned as part of its electoral preparations, would now be deferred.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) today, Friday, 10th April 2026, during which, among other issues, the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise was considered,” the statement read.
“Following deliberations, the Commission resolved to postpone the exercise until after the 2027 General Election,” the statement added.
INEC explained that the voter revalidation process remains a crucial aspect of its mandate to ensure the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.

According to the commission, the exercise is designed to verify existing voter records, update personal information, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, and enhance the overall integrity of the voter database.
It also provides an avenue for registered voters to confirm their details and correct any discrepancies.
“The voter revalidation exercise is a critical component of the Commission’s mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters,” the statement noted.
Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process and maintaining public confidence in elections.
“INEC remains committed to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections,” the statement concluded.
