Kaduna Governor Visits Freed Kurmin Wali Worshippers

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, on Thursday visited the remaining church worshippers recently freed after weeks in captivity following a bandit attack on churches in Kurmin Wali village, Kajuru Local Government Area of the state.

The governor visited the victims at the Women and Children Shelter in Kaduna, where they are currently receiving medical treatment and psychosocial support.

The worshippers were abducted on January 18, 2026, when armed men attacked three churches in Kurmin Wali community during Sunday services. The attackers reportedly fired sporadically to create panic before abducting worshippers and leading them into nearby forests.

Confirming their release, the Village Head of Kurmin Wali, Ishaku Dan’azumi, said in a telephone interview on Thursday that he received information early Tuesday morning that the remaining abducted worshippers had been freed.

It was reported that no fewer than 177 worshippers were kidnapped during the coordinated attack. However, about 80 of them were said to have escaped while being taken into the bush and later sought refuge in neighbouring communities.

As of the time of filing this report, attempts to obtain confirmation from the Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, were unsuccessful, as he could not be reached.
