Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the adoption of a revised salary structure for academic and non-academic employees of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and Northwest University, Kano.
The approval was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, titled “Gov. Yusuf Approves Salary Increase for Staff of Two Kano Universities.”
The statement said, “Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the implementation of a new salary review for Academic and Non-Academic Staff of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and Northwest University, Kano.”
The revised pay package is based on the remuneration structure currently being implemented by the Federal Government in federal universities.
According to the statement, the decision followed the submission of a report by a committee set up by the State Executive Council to assess requests from the two institutions seeking to adopt the new federal salary package.
The governor approved January 2026 as the effective date of the new remuneration, although actual payment will begin in September 2026.
The statement added, “Under the approved arrangement, the new remuneration package will take effect from January 2026, while payment will commence in September 2026.”
The new salary structure will cost the state government ₦391,847,555.24 monthly, translating to ₦4,702,170,662.88 annually across the two universities.
Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, will account for ₦228,195,210.83 of the monthly cost. Of this amount, ₦141,082,223.37 is earmarked for academic staff covered by the ASUU agreement, while ₦87,112,987.46 is for non-academic staff under SSANU.
At Northwest University, Kano, the monthly financial commitment stands at ₦163,652,344.41, with ₦112,238,985.30 allocated to academic staff and ₦51,413,359.11 to non-academic employees.
To begin clearing the financial obligations, the government has approved ₦1,567,390,220.96 in the 2026 Supplementary Budget for salary payments covering September through December 2026.
The arrears for January to August 2026, estimated at ₦3,134,780,441.92, will instead be captured in the state’s 2027 Budget.
The government said the salary review was designed to promote industrial peace and improve the welfare of employees at the two institutions.
It said, “The decision, according to the committee’s report, is aimed at ensuring industrial harmony and improving the welfare of staff of the two institutions, in line with the implementation of the new remuneration package in federal universities and other state-owned universities.”
In a related development, Governor Yusuf approved the consideration of visitation panels for the two universities as well as other tertiary institutions across Kano State.
The measure is expected to enhance accountability, improve administration and strengthen the overall management of the institutions.
The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and the improvement of higher education, describing both as key components of its broader human capital development agenda.
