Lawmakers in Kano State have initiated impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam, citing allegations of misconduct, abuse of office and breach of public trust.
The process began on Thursday, March 5, when Majority Leader Lawan Dala presented the impeachment notice on the floor of the House, which was then read out by Speaker Ismail Falgore during the day’s plenary session, according to Leadership Newspaper.
The lawmakers said they are acting under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, which provides the legal framework for state legislatures to begin impeachment proceedings against a deputy governor accused of gross misconduct.
Thirty-eight members of the assembly signed the impeachment notice.

Speaker Falgore has instructed that Abdulsalam be formally served with the notice in accordance with constitutional requirements.
The development comes against a backdrop of political friction in Kano State that began after Governor Abba Yusuf left the New Nigeria Peoples Party to join the All Progressives Congress last year.
Unlike the governor, Deputy Governor Abdulsalam declined to switch parties and has remained a member of the NNPP.
His decision not to follow Yusuf to the APC is believed to have widened divisions within the state government and fueled speculation about his future, ultimately leading to the impeachment move now underway.
