The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has sharply criticized the proposed transfer of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to a prison facility in Sokoto State, arguing that such a move could severely compromise his safety and undermine his legal right of appeal.
In a statement released on Sunday, the 23rd of November, 2025, IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, labeled the decision regarding the sentence and transfer as “malicious.” Powerful further alleged that these actions are part of a continuous, deliberate campaign targeting Kanu and the broader movement for Biafra self-determination.
The group has issued a strong appeal to the Federal Government, urging it to take responsibility for guaranteeing Kanu’s safety and ensuring that his legal processes, including the ability to pursue appeals, are not impeded.
IPOB specifically raised concerns over the escalating security challenges prevalent across parts of North-West Nigeria, asserting that relocating Kanu to a Sokoto facility significantly increases the risks to his wellbeing.

Beyond internal appeals, the separatist group called upon the international community to take immediate notice of the situation. It also demanded that the government adhere to fundamental constitutional principles, such as the Federal Character principle.
IPOB reaffirmed its operational ethos, stating, “We are a peaceful, peaceful and disciplined movement.” The group maintained that the most effective way to de-escalate political tensions would be for the government to “allow Biafrans to exercise self-determination through a United Nations-supervised referendum.”
Concluding their statement with a direct call for vigilance, the group emphasized: “Nigerians and the international community should ensure that no harm befalls Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. They should also monitor that his right of appeal is protected.”
