Imo PDP Faction Decltares Wike National Leader, Backs Anyanwu’s Leadership

The Samuel Anyanwu faction of the Peoples Democratic Party in Imo State has thrown its weight behind the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, naming him the national leader of the party at a stakeholders’ meeting in Owerri.

The session, convened by the State Chairman, Austin Nwachukwu, brought together party elders, elected officials and key stakeholders from across the state.

Nwachukwu said the chapter remained committed to the PDP’s guiding principles despite internal disputes at the national level. He added that the party in Imo would continue to uphold unity and internal democracy.

A key resolution at the meeting was the unanimous endorsement of Wike as national leader.

Stakeholders highlighted his “long-standing contributions” to the PDP and credited him with helping reposition the party after its loss of federal power in 2015.

They described the FCT minister as a stabilising force whose political strength had supported the party’s reorganisation in turbulent periods.

The meeting also reaffirmed support for Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary of the faction, praising what they called his steady efforts to strengthen party structures statewide and nationally.

Stakeholders further expressed confidence in AbdulRahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman and Senator Maho Ohabunwa as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, saying both men provided complementary leadership for rebuilding the party.

They distanced themselves from the recent PDP convention held in Ibadan, which they labelled unlawful.

They also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for shunning the event, saying its action reinforced the need for due process.

Nwachukwu insisted that the Imo PDP remains an “undivided entity” and urged members to stay united as preparations for the next election cycle gather momentum.

The endorsement comes amid deepening national divisions in the PDP, following mutual expulsions between the Damagum-led faction and the bloc loyal to Wike and Anyanwu.
