Karnataka Clamps Down On Social Media Use For Under-16s

The government of Karnataka, a southern region of India known for its technology industry and the city of Bengaluru, announced on Friday, March 6, 2026, that it will ban social media access for children under the age of 16.

The decision was disclosed during the presentation of the state’s 2026–27 budget.

State officials said the measure is aimed at protecting minors from potential online risks, including exposure to harmful content and concerns about digital dependency.

Under the policy proposal, individuals below 16 would be restricted from creating or using social media accounts unless appropriate verification systems or parental consent arrangements are introduced.

Karnataka becomes the first Indian state to adopt an age-based social media restriction of this kind.

Authorities have not yet provided a specific timeline for implementation or detailed guidelines on enforcement.

Technology companies and digital rights organizations are expected to review the implications of the policy, particularly regarding age verification requirements and compliance mechanisms.

Supporters of the initiative argue that stronger safeguards are necessary to protect children in an increasingly connected digital environment.

Further details on enforcement procedures and regulatory guidelines are expected in subsequent government announcements.
