Kemi Badenoch Ousts Jenrick From Shadow Cabinet Over Defection Plot

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch dismissed Robert Jenrick from her Shadow Cabinet on Thursday, January 15, 2026, later withdrawing the party whip and suspending his Conservative Party membership after claiming she had been presented with “clear, irrefutable evidence” that he was planning to leave the Conservatives for another political party.

Jenrick, who had served as Shadow Justice Secretary since November 4, 2024, and had been a leadership rival to Badenoch in the 2024 Conservative Party leadership contest, had been one of her most senior frontbench figures before his removal.

In her statement, Badenoch said she acted to protect party unity and prevent internal destabilisation as the Conservatives prepare for forthcoming elections.

She added that the British public were “tired of political psychodrama” and that she would not allow further internal turmoil.

Badenoch said the evidence showed Jenrick was plotting in secret in a way she believed would harm both his colleagues and the wider party.

She did not specify which party he intended to join, though there has been speculation about Reform UK, the right-wing party led by Nigel Farage, in connection with potential defections.

Jenrick’s exit from the shadow frontbench marks a significant shift in the Conservative leadership team and underscores growing strain within the party, which has faced criticism over recent local election results and high-profile defections.

His removal is expected to intensify debate about the party’s direction and cohesion ahead of national polls.
