The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, failed to resume plenary on Thursday, one week after adjourning its last sitting.
The House, during its first sitting of 2026 held last Thursday, commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct. The allegations include the demolition of the state assembly complex and the expenditure of public funds without legislative approval, among others. The sitting was adjourned to January 15, 2026.
However, as of noon on Thursday, January 15, 2026, the House had yet to reconvene. A correspondent who visited the temporary sitting venue at the conference hall of the Assembly’s official legislative quarters along Aba Road observed no activities indicating that plenary would hold.

No official explanation was given for the failure to resume, and no new date for plenary was announced as of the time of filing this report.
Efforts to obtain clarification from the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Eneme George, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or messages.
