Keyamo, FAAN Approve Design For Lagos Airport Monorail

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have approved the design for a monorail project linking the Ikeja railway station to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

Keyamo, announced the approval in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday, October 20, following a review involving the ministry’s permanent secretary, FAAN’s managing director and engineering teams from both organisations.

Keyamo said the proposed monorail would connect the Ikeja station, where the Lagos Red Line terminates, to the international airport’s Terminal 1, which is currently undergoing reconstruction.

“We appraised and approved the design of the Lagos Airport monorail that would take commuters and the flying public from the Ikeja Railway Station (where the Lagos Redline terminates) to the terminal point at the new Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 1 that is now being reconstructed,” the minister wrote.

He disclosed that the route would feature five stations to serve passengers travelling between Ikeja and the airport.

“There would be 5 stations/stops along the way, namely, Ikeja Station, Domestic Airport Station, Beesam Station, Toll Gate Station and MMI Airport Station.”

The minister described the monorail as an integral part of the reconstruction of the Lagos airport, which remains Nigeria’s major aviation gateway.

The project is expected to strengthen connections between the state’s rail network and the airport, providing an additional transport option for commuters and air travellers.

Keyamo had announced on June 8 that the aviation ministry was collaborating with the Lagos State Government to extend the state’s rail line to key airport terminals to improve connectivity and passenger movement.

Under the earlier proposal, the rail extension would run from Ikeja through the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) and Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MM2) before reaching the international terminal.

The latest approval advances the government’s plans to improve transport links around the airport as reconstruction work continues at Terminal 1.
