King Charles III is hosting the first Nigerian state visit to the United Kingdom in 37 years, welcoming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu with full ceremonial honours at Windsor Castle.
The two-day visit marks a significant diplomatic milestone between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation. The Nigerian delegation was formally received by senior members of the Royal Family, including Queen Camilla and Prince William alongside Princess Catherine.
President Tinubu and the First Lady arrived in the UK on Tuesday and were welcomed earlier at the Fairmont Windsor Park before being escorted to Windsor for the formal reception. The ceremony featured a carriage procession, a guard of honour, and a military parade on the castle grounds. The band of the Grenadier Guards performed both the Nigerian and British national anthems as the leaders circled the quadrangle.
President Tinubu inspected the troops during the ceremonial review, with King Charles walking slightly behind, in line with royal protocol.
The state visit aims to strengthen diplomatic, trade, defence, and financial ties between both nations. According to Nigerian government spokesman Mohammed Idris, the visit represents efforts to transform long-standing relations into a modern economic partnership. He noted that Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms are designed to unlock the potential of Africa’s largest consumer market, describing the United Kingdom as a natural partner in future cooperation.
The King and President Tinubu are scheduled to deliver speeches at a state banquet in St George’s Hall, attended by political leaders and notable figures with links to Nigeria. The banquet will also include exchanges of gifts and displays of Nigerian-related artefacts preserved in the Royal Collection.

As part of the programme, President Tinubu and the First Lady will lay a wreath at the tomb of the late Queen Elizabeth II in St George’s Chapel. An interfaith engagement is also planned to promote religious dialogue and mutual understanding.
Mrs Tinubu, an ordained pastor, is scheduled to preach at Lambeth Palace on Thursday and meet representatives of the Church of England. The engagements reflect the broader theme of strengthening ties across culture, faith, and governance.
The visit takes place amid heightened global tensions, including conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, and follows recent international discussions involving other world leaders at Windsor. The banquet will also mark the King’s first major speech since recent developments concerning his family.
With ceremonial pageantry, diplomatic dialogue, and economic discussions underway, the visit underscores both nations’ commitment to deepening cooperation in trade, finance, defence, and international relations.
