Tyler Robinson, 22, made his first in-person court appearance on Thursday, December 11, 2025, as proceedings advance in the aggravated-murder case over the September killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Robinson appeared before Judge Tony Graf at the Fourth District Court in Provo, wearing civilian clothing but restrained at the wrists and ankles.
He faces aggravated murder and several related charges stemming from the September 10, 2025, shooting at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Prosecutors have formally indicated their intent to seek the death penalty .
Thursday’s session focused on procedural issues, particularly how much access the media will have as the case progresses.
Robinson’s attorneys argued that restricting coverage is necessary to protect his right to an impartial jury amid national attention. Media organizations pushed for broad transparency.
Judge Graf has not yet issued a final ruling but limited visual recording of Robinson’s restraints while broader access rules are still under consideration.
Until Thursday, Robinson had participated in hearings only via video from the Utah County Jail, where he has been held since his arrest.
He has not entered a plea. During the brief appearance, he exchanged glances with family members in the courtroom, several of whom were visibly emotional.

Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while addressing students during an outdoor debate-style event at the university.
The attack, captured on video and witnessed by a large crowd, drew nationwide attention and sparked renewed debate over politically motivated violence in the United States.
The court is expected to address further procedural matters before the end of the year, with the next status hearing set for December 29, 2025, and a preliminary in-person hearing planned for May 2026 as the case moves toward trial.
