Nollywood actor Kunle Remi has stirred conversation online after comparing the award processes of the Academy Awards and the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
Remi made the comments on his Instagram story on Monday while reacting to a viral video showing Hollywood actor Michael B. Jordan receiving his Oscar statuette for Best Actor at the 2026 ceremony.
Jordan won for his dual role as Smoke and Stack in the Southern Gothic horror film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler.
“So happy for MBJ. So they engrave your name after you win! Right there. Take it home! If na AMVCA, all of you will share one for the night then come back and collect it at the next award,” Remi wrote, drawing attention to what he implied was a less efficient practice in African award shows.
Jordan’s victory also places him among the few Black actors to have won the Best Actor category in the history of the Academy Awards.

In his acceptance speech, he thanked Coogler and paid tribute to Black film pioneers including Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington.
Remi’s post reignited discussions among Nollywood fans about his past omission from the AMVCA nomination list despite his acclaimed performance in Anikulapo.
In 2023, he portrayed Saro in the film, which received multiple nominations. Remi responded graciously at the time, thanking fans and congratulating colleagues who made the list.
Meanwhile, organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards have closed submissions for the 12th edition of the ceremony, which is scheduled to hold in Lagos in May 2026.
