Labour Party Kicks Against Proposed Pay Rise for Political Officeholders

The Labour Party has condemned the proposed salary increase for political office holders by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), describing it as “unconscionable” at a time when Nigerians are struggling with economic hardship.

The party issued the warning in a statement signed by its interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, on Friday, August 22.

Akeni said the plan was “a misadventure” and called on RMAFC to “retrace its steps in the best interest of the country.”

According to the Labour Party, the focus should be on raising the minimum wage for Nigerian workers beyond the current ₦70,000 rather than increasing salaries for political leaders.

He also pointed to the stance of the United States Government, which recently pushed for better pay for Nigerian workers.

“If a foreign nation could demonstrate such empathy towards our suffering citizens, the RMAFC’s chairman and commission members have no valid excuse not to do more,” he said.
