Lagos Approves Recruitment of 1,400 Officers to Strengthen Sanitation

The Lagos State Government has approved the recruitment of 1,400 additional officers into the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) unit, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance environmental enforcement across the state.

The approval, granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the State Executive Council, is aimed at reinforcing the government’s capacity to maintain cleaner, healthier, and more orderly public spaces.

According to a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, on Wednesday, the new recruitment drive will further empower the Corps to monitor compliance with environmental laws, curb indiscriminate waste disposal, and discourage street trading in restricted areas.

Wahab explained that the expansion would also strengthen the state’s waste management framework and promote sustainable practices across all localities in Lagos.

“This move is aimed at strengthening enforcement and supporting the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources in maintaining cleaner, healthier, and more orderly public spaces across Lagos,” Wahab stated.

He added that the Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to building a #CleanerLagos and achieving the vision of a #GreaterLagos that prioritizes public health, safety, and environmental sustainability.

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps operates under the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and plays a key role in enforcing environmental regulations, ensuring public compliance, and promoting a culture of cleanliness in Africa’s largest megacity.
