Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially launched the Omi Eko project.
A €410 million initiative aimed at transforming water transportation in Lagos State through the introduction of electric ferries and major infrastructure upgrades.
Unveiled at the Five Cowries Terminal, Falomo, on Friday, October 17, 2025, the project will deliver 78 fully electric ferries, construct and rehabilitate 25 terminals, and dredge 15 key waterways to enhance access and safety.
The Omi Eko scheme is being implemented by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) in partnership with international development agencies, including the European Union, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
The Lagos State Government and private investors are also providing financial support.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described the initiative as a cornerstone of Lagos’s long-term transport master plan, designed to ease congestion on the roads and promote a sustainable, interconnected mobility system.
He said the deployment of electric ferries reflects the state’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions and environmental innovation.

Under the plan, the ferries will be powered by renewable energy and integrated with digital ticketing platforms, smart terminals, and existing road and rail services to create a seamless intermodal transport network.
Sanwo-Olu said the phased implementation, which will run from 2025 to 2030, will significantly reduce travel time for commuters, lower emissions, and boost commercial activity along coastal corridors.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, noted that the project will generate thousands of jobs during both construction and operations, adding that it will raise safety standards and redefine commuting on Lagos waterways.
Transport experts have described Omi Eko as a landmark initiative that will position Lagos as a continental leader in sustainable urban transport and innovation.
