Lagos State authorities launched a major operation on Monday, January 5, 2026, to remove illegal structures along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, aiming to ease traffic, improve sanitation, and enforce urban planning laws.
The clearance began at Alakija in Amuwo‑Odofin and has moved through Iyana Iba, with work ongoing opposite Lagos State University (LASU) and at Alaba Market in Ojo.
The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), working with enforcement teams from the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, is dismantling unapproved stalls, shanties, and roadside encroachments that have long blocked free movement along the busy corridor.
Authorities described the operation as part of a sustained campaign against urban encroachments that disrupt traffic, compromise safety, and harm the environment.

The clearance is expected to ease congestion, remove waste hazards, and ensure compliance with planning and sanitation regulations.
Motorists and residents welcomed the action, saying it should improve travel times, boost road safety, and restore order along the critical route linking Lagos with neighbouring states.
No official completion date has been given, but officials said the exercise will continue until major obstructions along the expressway are fully removed.
