Lagos Seals Three Surulere Properties Over Hazardous Wastewater Violations

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Thursday sealed three residential properties in the Ijeshatedo area of Surulere over persistent discharge of untreated wastewater and foul odour, in what authorities described as part of intensified enforcement against environmental violations.

According to a statement shared by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the affected properties—located at No. 73, 98, and 102 Ijikoyejo Street—were shut after repeated warnings and public complaints about offensive odours and unsafe waste disposal practices.

At No. 73 Ijikoyejo Street, officials said the building was sealed for the unabated discharge of untreated wastewater, which had resulted in persistent foul smells in the neighbourhood.
A similar situation was reported at No. 102, where residents had lodged multiple complaints about a failed and overflowing septic tank releasing untreated wastewater into the environment.

The property at No. 98 Ijikoyejo Street was also closed following findings that faecal matter and untreated wastewater were being discharged directly into the surroundings—a situation the government described as a “public nuisance” with serious health and environmental implications.

Wahab, who reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental infractions, urged Lagos residents to prioritise the maintenance of their wastewater systems and adhere to proper hygiene practices.

He warned that defaulters would face sanctions or prosecution, stressing that the government would continue to clamp down on hazards that threaten public health.

“This enforcement is to protect our communities. Residents must maintain their wastewater systems. Violators will be sanctioned or prosecuted,” Wahab said.

The recent action forms part of the ongoing #ZeroToleranceLagos campaign aimed at strengthening environmental compliance across the state.
