The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit has arrested 49 individuals during a coordinated early morning raid in the Victoria Island area, aimed at curbing criminal activities and clearing illegal settlements.

The operation, which commenced around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, was led by the agency’s Chairman, Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele. Targeted areas included Maroko Sandfill, Bonny Camp, and surrounding communities notorious for harbouring street thugs and petty criminals.

According to Akerele, the raid followed a series of complaints and intelligence reports from concerned residents.

“Those who choose to undermine the peace and security of our communities must desist or be prepared to face the full weight of the law,” he stated. “We will not relent in our efforts to ensure a safer and cleaner Lagos.”

Of the 49 suspects apprehended, 48 are male while one is female. Akerele confirmed that all suspects have been charged in accordance with Lagos State laws.

He also noted that the task force has intensified its enforcement activities, now conducting operations at least three times weekly, with a focus on illegal settlements and crime hotspots.

“Our mission is to restore sanity in public spaces, eliminate threats to public safety, and maintain the cleanliness of Lagos for the benefit of all residents,” Akerele emphasized.

The operation reflects a broader push by Lagos authorities to enhance urban security and uphold environmental standards across the state.
