Lamido Endorses Jonathan as PDP’s ‘Strongest Option’ for 2027 Presidency

Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has openly endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) best candidate for the 2027 presidential election, urging the party to bring him back into its fold.

During an interview on Channels Television on Friday, Lamido said, “I think for PDP now they should try to woo him [Jonathan]; he is their best bet. To me, he is their best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him.”

Praising Jonathan as a seasoned leader with a deep understanding of governance, Lamido said no current southern member of the party could match his track record.

“He is most welcome, competent, and very qualified. To me, I welcome him into the PDP. I think so far in the PDP, with all respect to all members, I don’t see a better alternative than Jonathan if he comes to the PDP,” Lamido stated.

“I don’t see any other person, really. If we are giving the presidency to the South, it will be the PDP. Who is there in PDP now that can challenge Jonathan in terms of being in office, being full-headed, being somebody who is willing to listen, and somebody who is also a key player who believes in partnership?” he added.

Lamido’s comments come amid growing speculation over Jonathan’s potential return to the PDP to contest in 2027.

While the former president has kept a low political profile since his 2015 electoral defeat and has not declared any ambition, reports suggest ongoing lobbying and negotiations within the party.

The speculation has intensified following the recent resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the PDP, which has triggered a wave of defections from the party.
