LAWMA Celebrates Female Sanitation Workers With Health Screening, Awards

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has honoured female sanitation workers across the state with free medical screenings and special recognition awards as part of activities marking International Women’s Day.

The event, which took place at the agency’s headquarters in Ijora Olopa, brought together female street sweepers and staff members in appreciation of their contributions to environmental sanitation in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, commended the dedication and resilience of female sanitation workers who play a critical role in keeping the state clean.

He explained that the initiative was organised to recognise their commitment while also promoting preventive healthcare among the workers.

According to him, the programme included medical check-ups and reward packages designed to improve the welfare of the sanitation workers.

Gbadegesin also disclosed that the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had approved a health insurance scheme for street sweepers in the state.

He noted that about 16,000 sanitation workers would soon receive health insurance cards under the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme, which would grant them free access to medical services.

“Their health insurance cards will be issued in the coming weeks, allowing all 16,000 sweepers to benefit from free healthcare under the Ilera Eko initiative,” he said.

The LAWMA boss also urged the workers to prioritise their health through regular medical check-ups and encouraged them to support the education of their children, particularly the girl child.

He further acknowledged the support of partner organisations such as Agatem Pharmaceuticals, Toleram Group and Waste Care, which contributed medications, food items and financial support for the sanitation workers.

As part of the celebration, five female street sweepers were presented with awards and gifts in recognition of their outstanding performance and dedication to duty.

Responding on behalf of the workers, sanitation staff members Mary Omoyosi and Taiwo Azeez expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government and LAWMA management for prioritising the welfare of sanitation workers through regular salary payments and other support initiatives.
