Nigeria’s most celebrated football coach, Clemens Westerhof, has returned to the country for a visit, accompanied by his wife, Lilian. The 85-year-old Dutch tactician arrived this week, rekindling fond memories of a golden era in Nigerian football history.
Westerhof holds a revered place in the hearts of many Nigerians, having led the Super Eagles to their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 1994. Under his guidance, the team also won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia, following earlier achievements that included a silver medal in 1988 and bronze in 1992.
His tenure remains unmatched: Westerhof’s leadership took Nigeria to an unprecedented 5th position in the FIFA World Rankings, the highest ever achieved by any African nation—a feat still yet to be equaled.
