The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to keeping traffic moving smoothly and safeguarding commuters as repair work begins on the 20-kilometre Lekki-Epe Expressway. The rehabilitation, which is scheduled to last 64 days, is expected to be carried out with minimal disruption to road users.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, gave the assurance on Tuesday, the 27th of January, 2026, explaining that comprehensive and well-coordinated traffic control measures have been activated to reduce inconvenience throughout the construction period.
Addressing officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Giwa explained that the project would not involve a complete closure of the expressway. Instead, traffic will be carefully managed at strategic intersections and known congestion points to maintain continuous vehicle movement along the route.
He revealed that the traffic control strategy is being rolled out in stages, supported by the deployment of over 305 LASTMA personnel across the three established traffic management zones on the Lekki-Epe corridor.
According to Giwa, the reinforced presence is designed to sustain free flow of traffic, allow prompt response to emergencies, and enforce compliance with traffic regulations, thereby ensuring safety and order during the rehabilitation exercise.
He noted that traffic pressure on the corridor has increased significantly due to major economic and infrastructure developments in the area, including the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lekki Free Trade Zone, Dangote Refinery, and other rapidly expanding commercial and industrial hubs.
To prevent congestion caused by vehicle breakdowns or accidents, Giwa said LASTMA has pre-positioned various recovery assets, including high-, medium- and low-capacity tow trucks, to ensure swift clearance of obstructions and avoid secondary traffic build-ups.
He added that the agency will also utilise drone technology for real-time aerial surveillance, enabling faster identification and resolution of traffic incidents along the expressway and other critical roads within the state.
The traffic management plan, he explained, also covers the installation of clear directional signage, enhanced lighting and additional safety infrastructure to support motorists while construction is ongoing.

To further strengthen enforcement and security, personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) brigade have been deployed to work alongside LASTMA officers to protect lives and property along the corridor.
Motorists were advised to make use of alternative routes to ease pressure on the construction zone. Giwa specifically recommended the Coaster Road, which connects Ogombo through Abraham Adesanya, as a viable option during the rehabilitation period.
He appealed to road users to remain patient, obey traffic laws, drive cautiously and cooperate with traffic officials, stressing that public discipline and understanding are critical to the smooth execution of the project.
Residents were also encouraged to promptly report traffic emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free hotline, 080000527862, with assurances of timely and professional response.
The state government called for public cooperation, describing the rehabilitation as a vital step toward improving mobility, enhancing road safety and supporting long-term economic development across Lagos.
