Jorge Messi, father and longtime representative of football star Lionel Messi, has died at 68.
He died at about 10 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026, at a medical facility in Rosario, Argentina, following a prolonged illness, according to reports from Argentine media.
The death came less than two months after the Messi family confirmed on June 18 that Jorge was receiving medical treatment under supervision. The family said he was recovering favourably but did not disclose his condition.
The announcement followed a false report of his death broadcast by Argentine television presenter Florencia Peña on June 18. Peña later apologised for the report.
Jorge’s health had drawn attention during the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Lionel Messi became emotional following Argentina’s opening match against Algeria on June 16.

The Argentina captain subsequently acknowledged that he was facing difficult personal circumstances.
Jorge was a key figure throughout his son’s career, representing Messi from his formative years in Rosario as he rose to global prominence.
He remained involved in managing his professional affairs during Messi’s spells at Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami.
His death ends decades of close personal and professional association with his son, who has become one of football’s most decorated players.
Funeral arrangements had not been publicly announced at the time of publication.
