Makinde Made Mockery Of Yoruba Tradition Over Oba Coronations — Oyo APC

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has criticised Governor Seyi Makinde for what it described as a “mockery” of Yoruba traditional institutions following the coronation of three high chiefs as Obas in Ibadanland.

The state government on Friday, April 3, elevated High Chief Akeem Adewoyh, High Chief Kola Babalola, and High Chief Sharafadeen Alli to Oba status. Notably, Alli, who represents Oyo South Senatorial District, is also an APC gubernatorial aspirant.

The coronation ceremony took place without the presence of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, the newly elevated Obas, and several prominent indigenes of Ibadan.

Reacting to the event, APC said Governor Makinde had tarnished his record in the state’s history.

In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, the APC said, “Gov. Makinde made a mockery of the Yoruba traditional institution today when he installed photographs and empty chairs as Obas.

“He can never have any justification for this shameful act but we are not surprised because we have known him to be an accidental public servant.”

The APC’s statement frames the governor’s action as disrespectful to Yoruba customs and questions the legitimacy of the ceremony in the absence of traditional authorities.
