Man Escapes Drowning As Flood Sweeps Through Asaba After Heavy Rainfall

Residents of Asaba, the Delta State capital, were thrown into panic on Saturday after a man was nearly swept away by a powerful flood following a heavy downpour in the Okpanam area of the city.

A viral video circulating online captured the dramatic moment passersby struggled to rescue the unidentified man as raging floodwaters dragged him along a flooded roadway.

In the footage, the victim could be seen partially submerged, with only parts of his body visible as he battled the strong current. Concerned residents gathered around the scene, desperately attempting to pull him to safety.

The rescue effort appeared to last several minutes as onlookers shouted for assistance and urged more people to join in the operation.

A distressed voice heard in the background of the video repeatedly appealed to nearby residents to help save the man before he was carried away completely by the flood.

The individual also cautioned a young boy who had moved close to the rushing water, warning him to stay back to avoid becoming another victim.

“God save him. This other man in the vehicle can’t come and help to rescue this man? What kind of problematic rain is this? God of mercy, please help this man,” the voice cried out.

The incident has reignited concerns over flooding in parts of Asaba, particularly in rapidly developing communities where drainage challenges have continued to pose risks during periods of heavy rainfall.

As of the time of filing this report, the condition of the victim had not been officially confirmed, although residents in the video appeared determined to ensure his rescue.

The development comes amid warnings by meteorological and emergency management agencies about increased rainfall and possible flooding in several parts of the country during the rainy season.

Authorities have repeatedly advised residents to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas and to exercise caution during heavy rains to prevent loss of life and property.
