Rains Flood Lekki Roads, Trap Commuters In Traffic Chaos

The Lagos State Government has reassured residents that the flooding experienced in parts of Lekki on Tuesday was temporary and would subside as water levels recede.

Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods and temporary tidal lock-ups, leading to severe traffic congestion along major routes, including Chisco Elegushi and the Elf axis, with traffic stretching back to Jakande First Gate.

A video of the incident circulated on social media, showing submerged sections of the road, with claims that the flooding followed about 30 minutes of rainfall.

Responding via a post on X, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, urged residents to remain calm, noting that the situation was being closely monitored by government teams.

He explained that the flooding resulted from a temporary tidal lock-up and would ease naturally as the tide receded.

Wahab said that once the tide level drops, floodwaters would discharge and road conditions would improve within a short time.

Also providing an update, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, confirmed that flash floods at the Chisco Elegushi axis had worsened traffic flow, with congestion extending to the Elf area and Jakande First Gate. He expressed confidence that traffic conditions would improve as floodwaters drain.

Osiyemi advised motorists to follow official traffic updates for real-time information, while residents were urged to exercise caution during movement as efforts continue to restore normalcy in affected areas.
