Roberto Mancini is set to return as head coach of the Italian national team after reaching an agreement to take charge of the Azzurri once again.
The decision follows a dramatic turn of events in the Italian Football Federation’s search for a new manager, with former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo reportedly missing out on the role despite being close to signing.
According to reports, Italian Olympic Committee president Giovanni Malagò intervened to halt Pirlo’s appointment over concerns linked to his collaboration with a Russian brand, leading the federation to change course.

The development also prompted Italian football legends Paolo Maldini and Leonardo to withdraw from the federation’s project, as both had reportedly backed Pirlo for the position.
Mancini, who guided Italy to victory at the UEFA European Championship in 2021, is now expected to finalize his return in the coming days.
His appointment marks a homecoming for the experienced tactician, who previously transformed the Azzurri into one of Europe’s strongest sides before stepping down in 2023.
The Italian Football Federation is expected to announce Mancini’s appointment officially once contractual formalities are completed.
