Mark-Led ADC Rejects INEC’s Derecognition Of Its Leadership

The David Mark-led faction of the African Democratic Congress has dismissed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s interpretation of a recent Court of Appeal ruling on the party’s leadership crisis.

ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi issued a statement on Wednesday, April 1, accusing INEC of bowing to government pressure.

“We reject INEC’s interpretation of the Court of Appeal ruling. We knew that INEC was being pressured by a government that has become jittery from the ADC’s rising momentum even in the face of its relentless assault on all opposition parties,” Abdullahi said.

He described INEC’s statement as riddled with inconsistencies.

“INEC’s press statement is full of contradictions that fly in the face of both facts and reason. We shall clarify these contradictions for all to see.

“What is clear, however, is that INEC has caved to pressure and has chosen to side with the government against the Nigerian people.”

Abdullahi said the party is exploring its options and will communicate its next steps shortly. He called on members to stay resolute.

“Nigeria is rising, ADC is rising,” he declared.

The ADC’s response followed an earlier announcement by INEC Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Kudu, stating that the commission would stop accepting correspondence from both the Mark and Rafiu Bala factions.

Kudu said INEC would also halt engagement with both groups and suspend monitoring of their activities until the Federal High Court resolves the dispute.

According to INEC, the crisis stems from events following the resignation of former national chairman Ralph Okey Nwosu.

A July 29, 2025, national executive committee meeting ratified Mark’s leadership, but Nafiu Bala Gombe, the former vice-national chairman, contested this, arguing he should have automatically assumed control.

Gombe filed a suit at the Federal High Court on September 2, 2025. Mark’s faction appealed a subsequent ruling, but the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal on March 12, 2026, issuing preservatory orders.

INEC said it resolved to “maintain the status quo ante bellum” and avoid actions that could prejudice the ongoing case.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to neutrality and compliance with judicial orders.
