The Rights Enforcement and Public Law Centre recently took its legal awareness campaign to Mile 12 Market, Lagos, educating women on their rights under the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
The initiative, supported by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme, focused on correcting misconceptions and empowering women to understand key legal protections, including their right to stand as sureties.
Executive Director of REPLACE, Felicitas Aigbogun-Brai, stressed that many women remain unaware of provisions in the law, including the prohibition of arrest “in lieu” and equal eligibility to act as sureties.
She urged law enforcement authorities to ensure full compliance with the law and respect for citizens’ rights.

Market leader Olaide Binitie described the sensitisation as timely, noting it would help women better respond to rights violations.
Stakeholders said sustained grassroots awareness is key to reducing abuse, empowering women, and strengthening justice delivery in Lagos.
